Commemorations in the United Kingdom for the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II began with the chimes of Big Ben in the British Parliament and excerpts from Winston Churchill's speech, read by actor Timothy Spall.

After Spall's intervention in Parliament Square in London, a military parade commenced, traveling down the Mall to Buckingham Palace. The royal family, including King Charles and Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and a group of veterans were expected to be present. Later, the royal family will appear on the palace balcony to witness a flypast of current and historical aircraft.

Events honoring the end of World War II will continue until Thursday, led by King Charles III, and will include parades, light displays, masses, and concerts. Although the official Victory in Europe Day is commemorated on Thursday, with the formal acceptance of Germany's surrender, activities have been taking place since today. The kings are expected to host a tea and pastries reception for veterans of the conflict.

The program will conclude on Thursday with the attendance of the kings and other members of the royal family at a church service at Westminster Abbey in London, marked by two minutes of national silence.
